Inhabitants in the small town of Nordreisa must have felt the end times are near as the sight of a beach full of dead herring (image here) awaited them after Christmas. It is estimated that up to 20 tons of herring were washed ashore. Experts are theorizing the fishes might have been trapped after fleeing away from a school of predatory fish during high tide and then got trapped as tide fell.
At least so far there are no indications of an illness being the underlying cause. To put the amount of dead fish into perspective, 20 tonnes represents something like 0.002% of annual total allowed catch for Norwegian spring spawning herring allocated to pelagic fishing vessels and 0.0002% of the total stock.
