More pancreas disease suspicions in Norway

Salmar ASA (OSE: SALM), one of the world’s largest producers of farmed salmon, said this week that there is a suspicion of PD at its Finnvika, Tromsø, Northern Norway production site. The suspected test result is from a single net pen (one fish cage) with 270 000 smolts in it with a production value of approximately 4 million NOK. The entire production site is owned by 100% owned subsidiary SalMar Nord AS and has approximately 2 million fish valued around 30 million NOK. Planned harvest from the site is in 2013.

More samples from the entire site will be taken and Norwegian Food Safety Authority will be involved in determining appropriate measures. Last month there were several reports on Pancreas Disease detections from Central Norway and Salmar ASA also had a confirmed detection of the disease in one of its sites there. Outbreaks of the disease in Northern Norway have been sporadic. If the suspicion is verified, fish in the net pen in question will be destroyed immediately.
