Ericsson (OMX: ERIC B, NASDAG: ERIC) said it has been assigned by 3 Italia to transform and upgrade the current 3G mobile broadband network to support 42Mbps HSPA and 100Mbps LTE (4G). The operator has made the decision to address the mobile data traffic growth. This will result in increased speed and coverage.
Ericsson and 3 Italia have been working together in various projects. 3 Italia is owned by Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa (SEHK: 0013; OTCBB: HUWHY). Based on earlier modernization contracts, HPSA+ coverage will be available on the entire nationwide network from the end of this month. First LTE services are expected to be launched within this year.
