Exit polls: Putin set to win in round 1

Vladimir Putin looks set to return as President of Russia for another term following today’s election. The exit interviews suggest Putin might get close to 60% of the votes, which would suffice for getting elected in first round. Putin has been the de-facto leader of Russia despite stepping aside in 2008 because the constitution barred him from running for a third straight term. His ally Dmitry Medvedev, won the election and selected Mr. Putin as Prime Minister.

Nordic trade with Russia has been on the rebound as of late. Markets typically dislike uncertainty, and a Putin win could be perceived as a positive, especially if the elections are considered relatively free abuse and his support numbers do not appear overly large. The opposition is already claiming the fraudulent activities have taken place where as Kremlin officials deny any widespread irregularities.
