Dead birds at Talvivaara

Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat wrote that Talvivaara Mining Company (OMX: TLV1V, LSE:TALV) and the Finnish police are investigating how a large number of dead birds ended up in a processing pool at the Talvivaara Mining site. The dead birds were discovered by a group of four, including a freelance reporter. According to them there were at least a couple dozen of those including some that were dying.

According to the reports, the group is being questioned regarding a potential offence against public peace namely an invasion of public premises. Police has not ruled out sabotage, which might be connected to recent demonstrations against the company. One speculation is that the birds may have flown into the pool since the neighbouring lakes are still frozen.

Wednesday’s printed Kauppalehti tried to put the environmental problems at Talvivaara into perspective and showed how sulfate emissions are a common problem in the industry. It also explained how those might be tackled with reverse osmosis methods.
