Nokia (OMX: NOK1V, NYSE: NOK) Lumia 900 U.S. launch event is taking place on NY Times Square this evening. The phone will start selling on AT&T this weekend with a discounted price coupled with a two-year operator contract. AT&T has said it is putting a lot of muscle behind the launch, undoubtedly with a lot of backing from Microsoft & Nokia and the two tech companies have worked to get the sales reps on board as well.
Most of the reviews on mainstream media have been ranging from lukewarm to positive. The design has been relatively unanimously praised where as the amount of available apps, and that of a few key applications in particular, is seen by most as the biggest thing lacking. The camera and battery life have received mixed comments whereas while the specs aren't most impressive on paper, the actual performance of the phone has been reviewed favourably.
Nokia is in somewhat of a hurry to gain back its name recognition across the pond and while the initial sales of this phone will not make or break the transformation of the company, investors will be gauging initial reaction for clues on the end result. Some investment houses gave early estimates on Friday, and they expect Q2 sales of Lumia 900 well below 1 million. Another Nokia story gaining international traction today is an Associated Press report on sullen mood in Nokia heartland at Salo as jobs are being moved to Asia.
