The European Telecommunications Standards Institute or ETSI chose Apple’s nano Sim card proposition over the solution offered chiefly by Nokia (OMX: NOK1V, NYSE: NOK) as reported by MacWorld magazine citing a source with knowledge of the decision. Apple’s solution is smaller and the space saving appeared to be an important factor. The new Sim needs to be compatible with the old phones.
Nokia had been pressing hard for its solution in the past months, even making threats not to license its patents if the rival plan was supported. Most recently it has considerably softened its tone and promises to be on board now. It still claims the chosen solution is technologically inferior but it appears some negotiations have been going on to alleviate its concerns.
For the next couple months, I will be in Western China. This will present some challenges to updating of the news over here. It has been a little while since last visit and people seem to be generally quite surprised how it has been possible that Nokia has completely disappeared in view in such a short time.
