EU Commission requests information regarding Talvivaara

YLE is reporting that EU Commission is about to start an investigation whereupon it will ask information on the Talvivaara Mine of Talvivaara Mining plc (OMX: TLV1V, LSE:TALV)in Sotkamo, Kainuu, Finland from Finnish officials. Should the information provided hint that the mine is operating in violation of the EU’s environmental laws, legal proceedings may be started. The information comes from a written reply to a question posed by Finnish EU Parliament members Sirpa Pietikäinen of the National Coalition and Satu Hassi of the Green League this April.

The information comes from Commissioner Janez Potocnik, who had undersigned the written reply which stated that the Commission is aware that certain omission may have been made in giving the environmental permits and their application. Hassi commented that this will hopefully open the eyes of local officials who have previously turned a blind eye to polluting the environment. She described the omissions made by the company completely unprecedented. Sirpa Pietikäinen said that the negative environmental effects of the mining industry haven’t been properly taken into account in Finland when new mines are being started.
