Finnish politicians stirring the pot

Finland’s Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen spoke of contingency plans should Finland be leaving the Euro a few days ago. This was reported globally, for example local Chinese press here interpreted it as admission that Finland will be leaving the Euro. Southern European politicians took great exception into the loose tongued remarks that cost them millions in increased borrowing costs on the same week, with Mario Monti most famously adding his comments. Urpilainen has been sticking to her guns and seems extremely unwilling to compromise or to try to help to solve the situation. This has gained her Social Democratic party more support domestically.

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen of the National Coalition added his part in an interview with Helsingin Sanomat, saying that Europe is again close to a total catastrophe. He claims that the arguments between politicians are taking place because many of them are now very afraid of what will take place. Therefore it is natural that countries are thinking of escape routes if “everything fails for reasons that have nothing to do with us”. He said that the rift between the Southern and Northern Europe hasn’t been this bad during the Euro era.
