Police found tens of kilos of materials that can be used to build explosives from the possession of a 31 year old man in Säynätsalo, Jyväskylä, Finland. He has told authorities, that he is studying chemistry in the University of Jyväskylä and that the chemicals are related to his studies. Iltalehti interviewed university personnel, who stated that the materials cannot be associated with his studies, since such would not be handed over to be used outside the University supervision. His student status however has been confirmed. The man has been detained on suspicion of an explosives crime and for preparation of an offense involving danger to the public.
Police is looking into the matter in more detail, thus far only saying that some of the materials were purchased online. The information reportedly came to police attention when the suspect's companion filed a report of domestic abuse. In talking to her it became known, that he is storing explosive materials at their home. Police has conviscated some 200 kilos worth of powders and liquids from their home.
