Statoil to award Cat-J rig contracts

Statoil ASA (OSE:STL, NYSE:STO) said it is preparing to tender for a minimum of two new type of drilling rig known as category J for mature fields on the NCS. The contracts will be awarded in H2 2012 and the rigs shall be delivered in H2 2015. The company is asking license groups to take ownership of these rigs. They will be industry-designed on Statoil’s behalf with hull designers, topside suppliers, construction yards and drilling contractors all having an input in the final design..

The new harsh-environment both surface- and subsea wells capable tailor-made jack-up rigs are supposed to have greater drilling efficiency and lower rates. The can operate at water depths from 70 to 150 metres and drill wells all the way down to 10 000 m and will be used for drilling and completion of production wells.

Statoil aims to increase drilling activity in existing fields. The aim is to maintain current production level towards 2020 on both improved returns and new fields. Statoil said that upgrade and adaptations of many existing rigs appear too costly. These newbuilds might cost nearly half a billion USD a piece.
