Newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported that Swedish wholesalers have been sold several tons of pork disguised as beef. The meat originated from Hungary and Argentina and was sold to the wholesalers by a company called Heat AB. Heat AB said it bought the meat from a Hungarian company Filetto thinking it was pork. Wholesaler Svensk Cater unusually got them directly from the said company without a middleman, became suspicious about the moistness of the meat and sent samples in for testing.
Other firms who have received the meat include CKA Charkförmedling and ML Foods. The dye that was used has not yet been established. Swedish officials have placed a EU-wide alert through Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed . In addition to potential hazards from the dye, customers may be at risk if they eat undercooked pork meat thinking it is beef.
