Atria invests in Malmö, closes factory in Halmstad

Atria Oyj (HEL: ATRAV) said yesterday that Atria Scandinavia is starting an efficiency improvement programme in Sweden with the aim of streamlining and automating the manufacture of ham products and slicing of cold cuts. These activities will be concentrated into Malmö production plant, where the company is making new investments for production equipment totalling approximately 4.7 million Euros. The company will also review production processes and invest in renovation of facilities.

The move will also mean the closure of Atria’s production plant in Halmstad. Negotiations with labour market organization have been started and up to 70 jobs are to be cut. Local media presumes some jobs might move to Malmö, but considering the investment is for automated production, this is likely to be minimal. The company expects annual cost savings of 1.5 million Euros going forward. After this the company will have production in seven locations in Sweden.
