Iceland’s flagship carrier Icelandair, which is owned by Icelandair Group (OMX: ICEAIR), said that it has committed with Boeing (NYSE: BA) to order eight Boeing 737 MAX8 and four Boeing 737 MAX9 planes. The deal includes an option for another dozen planes in total. The first delivery is scheduled for 2018. The former planes fitted for Icelandair’s needs will hold 153 and the latter ones 172 passengers. The list price for all the 12 planes is 1.2 billion USD.
The purchase will be financed by internal resources and by commercial banks. Furthermore financing subsidies are sought from Export-Import Bank of the United States. Currently the company has a total of 15 Boeing 757-200, 1 Boeing 757-300 and 4 Boeing 757-200F planes in service and it feels Boeing’s planes best suit its growth ambitions and planned destinations.
